“This unique full-day guided tour takes you from Namibia’s capital, Windhoek, to the Otjihaenamparero Dinosaur Tracks, one of the country’s most remarkable and little-known prehistoric sites. Nestled near the town of Kalkfeld in the Otjozondjupa Region, the site features fossilized dinosaur footprints dating back over 150 million years to the Jurassic period. The tracks, preserved in sandstone, offer a captivating glimpse into Earth’s distant past and make for an enriching day of natural history, geology, and scenic exploration.
Departure & Drive
The journey begins early in the morning with a pick-up from your accommodation in Windhoek.
You’ll travel in a comfortable 4×4 vehicle, heading north along the B1 highway and through open Namibian landscapes, dotted with acacia trees, small towns, and distant mountains.
Your guide will provide commentary about the regions you’re passing, including local culture, flora, and fauna.
Otjihaenamparero Dinosaur Tracks Visit
Located on a private farm near Kalkfeld, the Otjihaenamparero site contains multiple well-preserved dinosaur footprints.
These tracks are thought to have been left by two types of dinosaurs:
A bipedal theropod, with three-toed footprints (about 30 cm in length)
A quadrupedal sauropod, with broader, more rounded tracks
A local guide or your tour guide will explain how the tracks were formed in soft mud millions of years ago and preserved over time by sediment and natural processes.
You’ll have time to walk around the site, take photos, and enjoy the quiet, otherworldly atmosphere of this remote geological treasure.
Lunch Break
After exploring the site, you’ll stop for a picnic lunch in a shaded area or enjoy a meal at a nearby lodge or local restaurant, depending on your preference and itinerary flexibility.
Optional Stops
If time allows, you may visit the Otjiwarongo Craft Market for local handmade crafts or have a quick look around the charming town.
Optionally, this tour can also be extended to include a stop at the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) near Otjiwarongo, for those interested in wildlife conservation.
Return Journey
You’ll begin the drive back to Windhoek in the mid-afternoon.
Expect to arrive back at your accommodation in the early evening, with plenty of fascinating facts and photos to remember the day."
